INSTITUT PENDIDIKAN GURU MALAYSIA (IPG)

Introduction

Institut Perguruan Guru is a higher institution specially chosen to train future teacher in primary school level under the Bahagaian Pendidikan Guru, Jabatan Sekolah and Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia or known as Ministry of Education Malaysia. Besides training future teacher, it also comes up with various programmes for teachers to upgrade themselves professionally.

History

The history of IPG started off in the 1878 where the Malay High School was established in Singapore. Later on, in the Year of 1922 the Sultan Idris Training College, Tanjung Malim started off to train malay teachers. As further on, there had been more demand on female teacher a Women Teacher’s Training College, Melaka began. Currently the college has changes it name to Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia, Kampus Perempuan Melayu, Melaka. There had been many changes going on the past century.

In these past few years there had been rapid changes within IPG. On the 2004, there were 27 teacher training college known as maktab perguruan dan 1 English Language Teaching Centre. Later on 2005, the ministry had come to a decision to upgrade all the colleges into Institut Pendidikan Guru and enables them to confer Bachelor in Education on the 13 Julai 2005. This is how I turned out to be the first batch of his programme. Although there was another batch before me which offered Bachelor in Education programme, it was done in collaboration with oversea university such as University of Deakin in Australia and local university such as Open University Malaysia. On 2006, the grand opening public ceremony of upgrading the IPG was done. I was pretty lucky as my college, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus un Abdul Razak was selected to hold this grand ceremony. I can still recall the part on welcoming the minister as I was part of the welcoming team with Malay Classic Instrument called Kompang. We also had the chance to shake hand with the Minister of Education Dato' Seri Hishammuddin bin Tun Hussein and current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. On 2008, the Dewan Rakyat has approved the upgrade of IPG as well as approval of amendment of Education Act 1996.
